R.I.P.-Ronnie James Dio

It’s a sad day in music with the passing of Ronnie James Dio. The heavy metal icon checked out at 67 after a battle with stomach cancer. Dio was a successful solo artist and he also succeeded Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath. Dio was an integral part of arguably the finest Sabbath album, ‘Heaven and Hell.’ During an interview three-years ago, he told me that the first city to embrace him as a member of Sabbath was Philadelphia. “I remember someone putting up a sign that said, ‘welcome Reverend Ronnie James Dio,’ at the Spectrum,” Dio said.  There was no other vocalist like the leather-lunged Dio, who started in doo wop. Dio tried to keep his age under wrap but a about three-years ago, a publicist sent me some of his doo-wop discs and noted t hat he has to be about 65. Age doesn’t matter in rock. If you have the goods, it’s fine and Dio was one of the best.
